Global Aging Initiative

The Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging is building a Global Aging Network with partner institutions of the McDonnell International Scholars Academy.

The Friedman Center aims to connect a network of scholars who are engaged in cross-national research and education that will advance actions critical to enhancing the lives of older adults and aging societies.

The network was formed through a partnership between the Friedman Center for Aging and Washington University’s McDonnell International Scholars Academy. The McDonnell International Scholars Academy has a network of 31 partner universities, including Washington University, in 23 cities across the globe. The Academy has two core missions: 1) recruit and mentor future global leaders; and 2) create forums for university partners to address global challenges (i.e., energy, public health, population aging, food and water).

The Global Aging Network is one of the more recent research networks created in partnership with the McDonnell Academy. A network focused on energy and the environment based out of Washington University’s School of Engineering has been in existence for several years, the McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environment Partnership.

The Friedman Center for Aging began connecting to scholars in aging across the McDonnell Academy partner universities in 2013 and has held several network meetings and offered one round of pilot funding. To date, we have connected with scholars representing 28 universities–18 McDonnell partner universities–and a range of disciplines including public health, social work, public policy, occupational therapy, medicine, economics, architecture, psychology, law, and anthropology.
