Strategic planning at Washington University in St. Louis includes a “global perspective” as one of five guiding principles. Global health research is an area of strength and growth at WashU that contributes to the institution’s mission and vision. Intramural seed funding can help to stimulate new global health research collaborations, as well as strengthen existing partnerships and projects. Seed funding to collect pilot data help faculty to be more competitive for larger, extramural grant opportunities to realize the university’s goal of being “a community of people driven to meet the world’s challenges.” Previous seed funding rounds have demonstrated success toward this goal.
This opportunity seeks to provide seed funding for pilot data collection for future extramural funding proposals among faculty at WashU and any one of the 32 McDonnell International Scholars Academy partner institutions.
Total funding available: $100,000
Award limit: $25,000 per award
Period of support: 12 months

One WashU faculty member and one McDonnell International Scholars Academy partner institution faculty are required as multiple principal investigators for each application. Faculty can be principal investigator for only one application but may be a co-investigator on other applications. Additional faculty, student, staff, and other international institutional partners, including those who are not part of the McDonnell International Scholars Academy are eligible to be part of the application team, including as a multiple principal investigator.
Grant recipients will be expected to present research findings at the next McDonnell Academy International Symposium.

Applications should include:
- Washington University applicant information: Principal investigator’s name, title/position, school, terminal degree and field of study, and email address
- Title and Abstract for general audience (150-word limit),
- Research Strategy, focused on transdisciplinary global health, including Aims, Significance, Innovation, and Approach sections (1000-word limit)
- Budget and Budget Justification
- Future funding plan, including specific Funding Opportunity Announcements (300-word limit)
- Letters of support from partner institution(s), including how these funds will be used for partnership development (recommended)
All applications will be reviewed duplicate by faculty and staff with relevant global health experience in the Global Health Center in coordination with the McDonnell International Scholars Academy and Brown School. Scoring criteria and approach will be modeled after those used by the U.S. federal government: Significance, Innovation, Investigator(s), Approach, Environment. An overall score will be provided to applicants, as well as a summary of major score driving strengths and weakness to support the reviewers’ score.
