Hypertension is the major contributor to the global burden of disease. Completion of this proposed cluster randomized trial will provide compelling, robust evidence on the effects of a multicomponent intervention aimed at reducing blood pressure levels in a high-risk, vulnerable population in Puno, Peru.
This proposal promotes intergenerational cardiovascular health of women and children in the high burden St. Louis, Missouri metro region, by rigorously testing HEALTH (Healthy Eating Active Living Taught at Home). This intervention is delivered through the Parents as Teachers evidence-based home visiting model in partnership with the study team at Washington University in St. Louis.
Nearly half of Nigerian adults have hypertension, and Nigeria has announced a national sodium reduction program for population-level hypertension prevention and control based on the WHO’s best buy SHAKE package. QUARTET USA is a phase II randomized trial testing the effect of a four-drug, quarter-dose blood pressure lowering combination among individuals with hypertension in federally qualified health centers in Chicago as part of the global QUARTET program (trial ongoing in Australia and in development in The Netherlands and Japan).
Chronic non-communicable cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD co-morbid conditions are responsible for high morbidity and mortality in Peru. This D43 training program, will develop a comprehensive research training program with the objective of preparing the next generation of Peruvian researchers to conduct high-quality, independent research on chronic CVD across the lifespan in Peru.
