Lisa Zickuhr, MD

Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology, Washington University School of Medicine

Professor Zickuhr is investigating how medical education materials might contribute to healthcare disparities. She found that published images of patients with lupus tend to have fairer skin tones, even though the disease predominates in patients with skin of color. In a subsequent study, health care providers self reported decreased confidence diagnosing rashes in patients with lupus and skin of color. Zickuhr hopes to create educational interventions to build clinicians’ skillset and help address this disparity. The Rheumatology Research Foundation of the American College of Rheumatology has granted the Clinician Scholar Educator (CSE) Award to Zickuhr. The award identifies best practices for telemedicine and the development of curriculum that teaches providers how to implement them. As assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology, she was also awarded with the Class of 2023 Distinguished Service Teaching Award in the area of research.
