Nhial Tutlam studies the impact of conflict (war trauma) on the mental health of populations affected by conflict. He is particularly interested in mental health outcomes and how they interact with HIV risk among refugee youth in Uganda refugee camps and the intergenerational trauma among refugee youth born to parents resettled in the United States as refugees. He develops interventions to address emotional and behavioral outcomes related to the impacts of intergenerational trauma, teaches epidemiology courses at the Brown School and formerly served as lead chronic disease epidemiologist at St. Louis County Department of Public Health overseeing chronic disease and mental health surveillance.
