Professor Allen’s focus is applied research to learn how best to support state and local health departments and their partnering organizations with capacity building for evidence-based chronic disease prevention. The goal is to support public health departments institute management practices to foster such capacity building, including leadership and workforce development, organizational climate and culture change, and partnership. Her work supports training and technical assistance provided to governmental health department employees and staff in partner organizations to enhance and apply understanding and skills in community assessment, planning, adaptation, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based policies and programs.
Her research is conducted with the mentorship of Ross Brownson, who leads the Prevention Research Center. Allen also interacts with masters and doctoral students in the Center for research on evidence-based public health. Her career has been devoted to chronic disease prevention through tobacco and school health policy and programs, adult health, and prevention research.
