Congratulations are in order for William G. Powderly, MD, Larry J. Shapiro Director of the Institute for Public Health and director of the Institute’s Global Health Center. In May of this year, he was both inducted as an honorary member of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, and awarded the Pillar of Support Award by the Washington University in St. Louis Academic Women’s Network.

Delta Omega’s mission is to encourage and recognize excellence in practice, research, education, and academic achievement in public health, and the Gamma Sigma chapter was established at the Brown School in 2013. Dr. Powderly’s peers nominated him for the honor, touting his commitment to teaching, advising, mentoring, leadership, and scholarly contributions to the field. “Dr. Powderly is collaborative, collegial and innovative in his approach to advance public health at Washington University, said Matt Kreuter, Brown School associate dean for public health. “He has focused and energized the Institute for Public Health, and engaged faculty and students from across campus.”

The Academic Women’s Network (AWN) presented Dr. Powderly with their Pillar of Support Award to recognize his commitment to supporting female faculty at Washington University and ensuring the inclusion of women in all of the various programs he leads. “Dr. Powderly has been a vigorous proponent of initiatives to advance career development in women,” said Tamara Doering, MD, PhD, professor of molecular microbiology and president of AWN. Doering specifically acknowledged the Institute’s Women Leaders in Public Health lecture series, created by Dr. Powderly in 2013.
Outside of his role at the Institute, Dr. Powderly is the J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine and co-director of the school’s Division of Infectious Diseases.
