Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine

Dr. Warren’s research interests center around the epidemiology and prevention of health-care-associated infections. Approximately 5-8 percent of patients admitted to the hospital will acquire a health-care-associated infection. These infections result in increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospital stay and increased health care costs. Dr. Warren would like to develop methods to prevent the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria among hospitalized patients and to understand risk factors for health-care-associated infections at a population level. He has work on several multicenter trials to test these interventions, such as bathing ICU patients with chlorhexidine-based products to prevent methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections. He has also participated in studies of surgical and medical-device-related infections, using large administrative datasets. He also investigates how the use of diagnostic tests affect the diagnosis of these infections and antibiotic use.
