Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is the most common human pathogen, affecting nearly half of the world’s population. It has also been recognized as human carcinogen, a chronic infection which can lead to gastric cancer. Professor Saenz’s research focuses on conducting analysis of the prevalence of Hp as well as of gastric pre-neoplastic lesions in patients in sub-Saharan Africa (i.e., rural Uganda). His goal is to assess the prevelence of Hp in this poorly-studied region of the world and to educate the regional population (including physicians, patients, and community health workers) on the importance of properly diagnosing and treating Hp.
