Joseph Steensma’s work exemplifies “transdisciplinary”. A successful scientist and entrepreneur who has founded and led several thriving businesses focused on public health, Steensma joined  Washington University to research and implement sustainable solutions to environmental problems.  His research looks at the interaction between economics, environmental degradation and public health. Recent projects include USAID-funded work seeking to improve the economic viability of sustainable aquaculture practices in Nigeria, biodiversity and agricultural production in Costa Rica, and the relationship of carbon monoxide exposures and nutritional status  in schoolchildren in Haiti. He is well known in many industries for his ability to improve operational outcomes while improving sustainability.
