Depression is a common psychiatric comorbidity in patients with heart disease and other major chronic illnesses such as diabetes. It is a risk factor for adverse medical and quality of life outcomes in these patients, as well as a risk factor for the development of heart disease and other chronic illnesses.
Dr. Freedland primarily studies the effects and treatment of depression, stress and anxiety in patients with heart failure, coronary heart disease or other chronic medical conditions. He is also actively involved in work on clinical research methodology, particularly in the area of clinical trial methodology in behavioral intervention research.
