Professor Cabassa is dedicated to health disparities research and implementation science. His work focuses on improving the health and mental health care of racial and ethnic minority communities in the U.S. and Latin America. His research examines physical and mental health disparities, with a focus on racial/ethnic minorities with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. His findings contribute to improving depression literacy and reducing the stigma towards mental illness in the Hispanic community, further the examination of adaptation and implementation of health interventions aimed at reducing health inequities and improving early intervention services for first-episode psychosis.

Professor Cabassa was inducted into the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW) in 2021, and appointed to the Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review in 2022.
