Professor Makedonka Mitreva applies computational tools, followed by experimental validation, to study infectious diseases. She focuses on neglected tropical diseases caused by helminthes that cause blindness, anemia, malnutrition, growth and development stunting in children, and severe morbidity and mortality in women during pregnancy. Her research also focuses on elucidating cross-kingdom interactions via structural and functional characterization of the human microbiome, especially dysbiosis associated with infections.

In 2023, Mitreva was elected to the American Academy of Microbiology in recognition of her contributions to the field of microbiology. The academy is an honorific leadership group and think tank within the American Society for Microbiology.
