Dr. Patwari’s team develops measurement tools such as new, non-contact “ambient” sensors which monitor people in their home, work or healthcare environments. These sensors use radio frequency (RF) waves, which need no contact with the person and can go through walls and furniture. The RF sensors can be deployed to monitor where people are located, how fast they move when mobile, their breathing and pulse rates when they’re at rest. A system could alert in case of a problematic change, for example, a breathing monitor for a opiod medicated patient could alarm if their breathing rate slows to a dangerous level.
