Gary Weil leads a group that conducts population-based epidemiology studies and clinical trials in Africa and Asia, the Death to Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis (DOLF) Project. The group develops and evaluates diagnostic tests for helminth parasite infections (lymphatic filariasis, river blindness and intestinal worm infections) that are major public health problems in the developing world.

Weil is the inaugural recipient of the Gerald and Judith Medoff Professorship in Infectious Diseases. He also received the 2016 Anne Maurer-Cecchini Award, which recognizes outstanding epidemiological or clinical research on neglected tropical diseases.
