Dr. Morrissey is interested in translating lab-based discoveries in nanotechnology to assay refinements in real world clinical settings for point-of-care diagnostics in major medical centers and to underserved regions or populations. He works closely with Dr. Srikanth Singamaneni in Materials Science on the Danforth Campus. The lab continually refines the technology to better serve people who have no traditional access to health care as well as those with adequate health care. The work includes enhancing the measurement of biomarkers of kidney disease, viral diseases and the development of refrigeration-free biosensors of kidney injury and viral infection such as for Zika and more recently SARS-CoV-2. The lab has also developed a means of refrigeration-free blood and urine biomarker preservation. This enables collection of biospecimens in urban/rural clinics and in low/middle income countries for analysis in central labs thereby extending diagnostic services to underserved populations.
