Margaret A. Olsen, PhD, MPH

Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine Director, Center for Administrative Data Research, Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences

Dr. Olsen’s research focuses on risk factors and outcomes of healthcare-associated infections, particularly infections in women undergoing breast reconstruction and surgical site infection after a variety of different surgical procedures. She is also interested in the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection. Dr. Olsen uses large administrative data sets, including health insurer claims data, to study the epidemiology of surgical site infection in women undergoing breast cancer surgery and the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection in the elderly. Her research interests also include optimizing methods to use billing and claims data for surveillance of healthcare-associated infections.
