Dr. Marotta has more than 10 years of experience in the United States and internationally evaluating the integration of innovative systems of treatment for substance use disorders, the HIV care continuum, and mental health within criminal justice settings. Dr. Marotta’s research examines structural barriers to engaging in substance use and HIV treatment among populations with disproportionate rates of police contact, arrest, incarceration and supervision on probation and parole. He studies the role of exposures to multiple types of violence including intimate partner, gender-based, police-perpetrated and childhood trauma in shaping overdose risk, substance use and sexual behavior and substance use prevention and treatment among adolescent youth.
