Professor Fazel’s research focuses on substantial deficiencies in the quality of healthcare delivered across the United States. Her dissertation addressed improvements in patient’s healthcare visits such as patient flow metrics (wait times, follow-up appointments and overbooking) and models that help streamline these issues. In general, the overall goal of her PhD research is to improve healthcare operations through systems engineering and optimization while focusing on operations and health outcome metrics. Her plans are to broaden this research in support of two overall goals: maximizing the long-run average daily net profit of a medical system from a business perspective, as well as quality of life from a human perspective.
