Institute Faculty Scholar: Effective public health programs in Africa can work in St. Louis

Institute Faculty Scholar, Fred Ssewamala, PhD, the William E. Gordon Distinguished Professor at the Brown School, is working with families in Africa on more than 20 public health programs to help them find stability. He says the lessons learned there through the implementation of programs in financial literacy, and prevention of structural inequities and infectious disease, can be applied here in the St. Louis region.

Ssewamala and his work are featured in an interview with St. Louis Magazine. The article discusses Ssewamala’s upbringing during a time of government oppression, war and torture of its Ugandan citizens, to his migration to St. Louis and his work to develop long-term developmental impacts for children and families, particularly those in sub-Saharan Africa, who are most affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS.
